Mongolian Applique Thangka C

Mongolia
#A-83
In Mongol and Tibetan tradition, the image of the dancing Citipati, "Lords of the Cemetery", is considered to be a powerful protection against thieves. This piece is in worn condition, but the image is masterfully executed. There was a great production of Buddhist art in Mongolia from the mid 19th century until the early 20th century. Workshops in the capital, Urga, were noted for the making of applique thangkas.
