Hopi Kachina
The Hopi of Arizona are highly renowned for their artistry. These tihu or Kachina (Katsina) dolls represent various deities concerned with many aspects of life and religion. This excellent Kachina was carved and painted in the old style by an unknown expert craftsman from Second Mesa.

Kachina figures are given to children during ceremonies by masked dancers who embody the Kachina spirits. They are important and valued teaching aids, helping young Hopis to learn the complex symbolism of their cosmology. In Hopi tradition if a tihu is sold by a family, it belongs to the child who must be consulted before it can be sold.

This doll represents Ho'otsani, an old Kachina who seldom dances anymore.
