Niger - Tuareg Man's Bag
Tuareg Man's BagTuareg Man's Bag Detail
The Tuareg nomads of the central Sahara, besides being notorious caravan pirates and slavers, are gifted craftspeople. As nomads the amount of material goods they own are obviously limited, but Tuaregs of all classes have always prized finely made leather saddle bags, jewelry and weapons of refined and sophisticated design. This is a very nice example of a Tuareg man's saddle bag, also known as a "wedding bag". It is a gift to a groom from his wife's family. Wedding bags are highly prized and always slung on a favorite riding camel when attending festivals. These bags are some of the finest Tuareg leatherwork. This older one is from the region of Agadez.
