Nigeria
- Embroidered Baba Riga
| These magnificent robes from the Hausa in Northern Nigeria are made of strip-woven cotton that is indigo-dyed and then embroidered with a locally produced raw silk. They are found across a wide area and are worn as high-status dress; under the reigns of Hausa sultans, they were important gifts to court retainers. The designs are embroidered by Mallams (Koran scholars) who claim that the Prophet Mohammed himself did such work, hence it is a well-respected craft. The elaborate motifs have protective qualities as well as being decorative. | ||
