Indigo-dyed dresses like this are from the Tihama Region in western coastal Yemen. They are entirely hand-sewn in very remote villages. The indigo will come off these as it is supposed to! The Yemenis, in common with various African peoples, often dye themselves blue all over with indigo. It is quite wearable - just don't wear anything but dark colors under it. Small pieces of shell and hammered brass or copper sequins decorate it, as well as embroidered designs. | |
