	The old community of Christians in Syria has always specialized in fine woodcrafts. This type of marquetry furniture is classically Syrian and very popular all over the Middle East. There also was a tremendous demand for Syrian furniture in the West in the early 1900's. Many houses had an "Oriental" room furnished lavishly with Middle Eastern rugs, furniture, lamps, etc. This style of Syrian furniture continues to be appreciated in both Europe and the U.S.
