| The jewelry-making technique used by Hopi silversmiths is called silver overlay, a process in which one layer of silver has a design cut out of it and then is soldered to another layer. Developed in the 1940's, this type of work grew into a unique Hopi style using motifs drawn from prehistoric Mimbres and Hisat Hopi (Anasazi) designs; Hohokam figures from Central Arizona; and designs from Hopi baskets, pottery, and ritual objects. Today Hopi jewelry using the overlay process is distinct from any other Native American silverwork. | ||
