Mali
- Dogon Kanaga Mask
| The Dogon live in fantastic adobe cliff dwellings in Mali and maintain some of the most dramatic dance rituals in Africa. Groups of dozens of initiate dancers perform with the Kanaga masks, circling their heads to sweep the ground with the top of the mask. The superstructure is said to relate to secret female or celestial symbols. Dogon cosmology is highly developed and only known completely by hogon priests that are guardians of sacred lore. Dogon rituals are still performed regularly; thus, fine authentic masks are still available. | ||
