Myanmar
- Harp
|
||
| The
saung gauk harp, played for the courts of the Burmese royalty, is certainly
one of the loveliest stringed instruments. The construction is unique –
the gracefully curved neck is from a naturally curved trunk selected from
a mountainside growth. Ceremonies are held to invite certain nat spirits
to inhabit the harp. The saung gauk's music is so exquisite that this seems
plausible. As in many other Asian cultures, this instrument from Myanmar
is revered as a sacred power receptacle, and rituals are offered periodically
to feed the nat that dwells in it. This saung gauk is of classic Burmese style with gilding and red and black lacquer. It has several old repairs but is fully tunable and playable. |
