Niger - Tuareg Tent Posts/Standards
Tuareg Tent PostsTuareg Tent Posts Detail
Although wood is almost nonexistent in much of the Tuareg's territory, it is traded in from immensely remote distances for beds, tent posts, bowls, saddle frames and other items. Wealthy and powerful Tuareg clans travel with elaborate gear and tent post/standards such as this. Utilitarian as well as decorative, these are part of a well-furnished tent household. Different designs indicate from far off distances exactly what tribe/family/clan is encamped, and help to identify friendly or hostile groups. In Bedouin custom, the ancient fear of raiding has led to elaborate codes of conduct; for example, tents are always approached from the front to show peaceful intent, and visitors will halt at some distance and wait to be welcomed.
